How to Measure Your Dog for a Collar (and Pick the Right Size)
A collar that's too loose slips over your dog's head on a walk; one that's too tight rubs. Measuring takes a minute and saves a return.
Measure the neck
- Use a soft tape measure. No tape? Use a piece of string or a phone charger cable, mark it, then lay it against a ruler.
- Measure where the collar sits, around the middle of the neck, not right behind the ears.
- Keep it snug, not tight. Write down the number.
- Check with two fingers. A well-fitted collar lets two fingers slide flat underneath. For a small dog that's about an inch of room; for a big dog, closer to two.
Already have a collar that fits well? Lay it flat and measure from the buckle to the hole your dog uses. That's the number you need.
Pick a size
Every Muddy Paw collar is fully adjustable, so pick the size whose maximum is at or above your dog's neck measurement.
| Size | Collar width | Fits a neck up to | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra Small | 5/8" | 12" | $12 |
| Small | 1" | 16" | $15 |
| Medium | 1" | 20" | $18 |
| Large | 1" | 26" | $21 |
If your dog measures right at the top of a size, or is a puppy still growing, go up one size so there's room to adjust.
